A leopard seal quickly snatches a baby gentoo penguin near a remote island off the Antarctic Peninsula. But instead of immediately devouring its prey, the seal plays with it by spitting it out twice. Titled Facing Reality, this interplay of life and death earned American nature photographer Amos Nachoum the grand prize and the title of “World Nature Photographer” of the year 2021.

In addition to Nachoum’s photographs, this gallery features other gold winners from the World Nature Photography Awards.

According to the awards website, the mission of the World Nature Photography Awards is to celebrate the world’s best nature photographers and bring the beauty of nature to a wider audience.

The website explains the group’s philosophy as follows:

While they know the challenges of climate change are enormous, incredible things can be achieved when they all come together to influence change. The World Nature Photography Awards is driven by this philosophy. They believe that we can all make small efforts to shape the future of the planet in a positive way and photography can have a powerful impact on people to see the world from a different perspective and change their own habits for the good of the planet.
