Travel Industry – A sharp rise in hiring

India’s travel, tourism and hospitality industry has opened its recruitment funnel as falling Covid infections and easing restrictions lead to a recovery in holiday travel bookings as well as an increase in travel business.

Travel agencies and online portals such as Thomas Cook and EaseMyTrip recruit employees in all functions. Large hotel chains such as ITC-supported Fortune Hotels, Lemon Tree Hotels and Royal Orchid Hotels are also hiring.

The demand for labor comes amid a resumption of travel plans as more people receive the double vaccine, surges in economic activity and amid massive pent-up demand after many had to put their travel plans on hold due to the rapid spread of the Omicron wave in January. Several wedding celebrations, which have been postponed due to the third wave, are also planned for the coming months, which will lead to increased hotel occupancy, senior company officials said.

Much of the hiring is focused on expanding product and technology categories, while others are aimed at filling outlets. The revival in recruitment in the travel and tourism industry comes after the loss of millions of jobs and the huge loss of income during the first and second waves of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lemon Tree Hotels, which had to lay off several employees at the end of the second wave, plans to hire about 1,500 employees for the rest of the year by opening 20 nearby hotels and adding workers to existing hotels, said Keswani, President and CEO. In the third fiscal quarter, the hotel chain had hired 1,500 workers when travel resumed after the second wave.

Royal Orchid and Regenta Hotels will hire 1,000 people as they expand into new markets and cities, adding 100 hotels to their portfolio by 2022. Royal Orchid and Regenta Hotels Chairman and CEO Chander K. Baljee said they have stepped up recruitment efforts across the group, from entry-level to senior positions.
Travel agencies are also increasing their workforce. Thomas Cook (India) and SOTC Human Resources Chair Mona Cheriyan said as the organization sees increased travel and potential for accelerated growth as airspace and borders open up, the organization will align its contracts with the growth.

CEO and Co-Founder Nishant Pitti said, EaseMyTripEaseMyTrip plans to double its workforce by the end of next fiscal year. There were a lot of acquisition announcements they made last quarter. This year, they plan to launch a localized travel search engine in each of their six global offices. They expect another V-shaped recovery in the sector from this month, and here are some of the main reasons why they are looking to double their workforce.

Economists and senior company officials said the expansion of the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) in the union’s latest budget of Rs 50,000, with the additional allowance for hospitality alone, will have a multiplier effect on job creation.

Bank of Baroda Chief Economist Madan Sabnavis said the Rs 50 billion budget allocation for hospitality and related businesses sends a positive signal to the sector that the worst is over. This will stimulate the expansion of the sector, leading to the creation of white collar and blue collar jobs.

Relaxing rules for international travelers without mandatory isolation or RT-PCR testing for fully vaccinated people is also expected to boost foreign tourist arrivals. Sabnavis said all of this will result in the need for more workers as the industry prepares to meet increased demand.

Others on the rise include Zostel, a chain of backpacker hostels looking for people who can research and build property in India, chief operating officer Deep Banka said. Samir MC, managing director of Fortune Park Hotels, said the company plans to add at least 1,000 employees over the next six months. Given the expected growth in the number of hotels in operation and the expected increase in economic activity in 2022-23, we will hire more than 2,000 people, he said.
