A month after launching its two-hour delivery service, hypermarket chain Big Bazaar said nearly half of its delivery business now comes from Tier II cities, where consumers send orders to local store managers via WhatsApp or by logging into their delivery app or website. In cities like Bhopal, Mangalore, Lucknow, Ranchi, Kanpur, Ghaziabad, and Varanasi orders have increased significantly over the past week.

Ongoing restrictions in several states have fueled demand for home deliveries. Meanwhile, visitor numbers to large modern retail stores have dropped by at least 50-60%, according to industry executives, as new Covid-19 restrictions encourage shoppers to avoid large stores and instead do shopping online or in local stores.

Big Bazaar is the Future Group’s flagship retail chain. The home delivery service was launched despite the struggling company trying to sign the pending contract with Reliance Industries Ltd.

Big Bazaar’s two-hour home delivery service started in April with Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi and has now expanded to 150 cities. The chain’s nearly 290 branches cater to deliveries and compete with the likes of Big Basket, Amazon, Milk Basket, Flipkart and Grofers.
